Observation Narrative
This plot represents vegetation which occupies interdunal swales well protected from overwash by unbreached frontal dunes. In general these swales support a denser herbaceous cover than any other maritime grassland type on Wallops Island. Spartina patens dominates these communities in a nearly continuous stand. Fimbristylis caroliniana, Sabatia stellaris, Agalinis virgata, Panicum virgatum, Juncus scirpoides and Juncus dichotomus are characteristic associates rarely found in other dune communities here. Classification of this type is problematic, as it is somewhat transitional between the terrestrial and palustrine classes.
Plot located on dunes ca. 0.25 mi northeast of helipad in north-central part of Wallops Island.
